5G LOCALIZATION AND MACHINE LEARNING FOR INTRALOGISTICS
FROM CONCEPT TO REALITY
In the dynamic collaboration of ‘SynergieRegion,’ NAiSE stood at the forefront as a key partner, contributing significantly to the successful realization of this groundbreaking project. On this project, spearheaded by ARENA2036, City of Stuttgart, Wirtschaftsförder Region Stuttgart GmbH (WRS), we collaborated with key industry players: University Stuttgart, Institut für Automatisierungstechnik und Softwaresysteme (IAS), Fraunhofer Institutes IPA and IAO, companies Balluff, Nokia, Pilz, Bosch, SPIE, Trumpf and Unisphere. The project was funded from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI).
The ‘SynergieRegion’ project aimed to explore new 5G applications for Smart City and Industry 4.0. The local testbeds, including the 5G testbed at the research campus ARENA2036, were instrumental in researching innovative solutions.
In the first phase of the project, our focus was on Localization via 5G in various intralogistic scenarios. This involved conducting both static and dynamic experiments with different cargo types and AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles) and AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots). The successful outcome paves the way for utilizing a unified technology for both communication and localization.
In the second phase, we delved into the Usage of Machine Learning to detect humans and their positions in front of an AGV, leveraging information from cameras and LIDARs (Light Detection and Ranging). This innovative approach allowed us to establish dynamic geofences around these positions within our NAiSE application, enhancing safety measures and facilitating more efficient path planning. The AGV, adhering to the VDA5050 standard, incorporates these geofences into its path planning, ensuring a proactive response to human presence by either adjusting its route or rerouting to avoid potential obstacles.
As a pivotal partner in the project, we contributed expertise and dedication to the realization of various application scenarios. The project’s focus on interconnected manufacturing, logistics, and Smart City applications demonstrates its multifaceted impact. NAiSE played an important role in various facets of the project, focusing on connected manufacturing and 5G-based positioning in logistics and intralogistics.
As ‘SynergieRegion’ transitions from a visionary concept to a realized project, NAiSE remains committed to driving innovation and shaping the future of intralogistics and Smart City applications.
